Different Martial Arts Disciplines From Around The World

There are countless styles of martial arts from around the world. Most of these are actually just variations of one another. While most styles originated in Asia, there are plenty of other styles from other parts of the globe.

One of the most well-known styles is karate. Karate originated in Japan, though there are many different variations of it that came from other countries. Styles like Shotokan and Goju-Ryu began in Okinawa. While some forms of Kenpo karate was developed in America. Another famous martial arts is Tae Kwon Do. This is a Korean martial art with a heavy emphasis on kicks. Other forms like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu completely deviates from the striking aspect found in most styles. Jiu-Jitsu utilizes grappling and submission techniques such as chokes and arm locks. Jiu-Jitsu rose to fame in the early 90′s after a practitioner by the name of Royce Gracie won a hand to hand combat tournament known as the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Also from Brazil is the art of Capoeira. This is actually a combination of martial arts and dance. It utilizes a lot of fancy footwork and acrobatics. It is used more for shows and performances than having effective self-defense applications.

From Thailand, there is a style known as Muay Thai. This style uses boxing techniques combined with kicking, clinching, knees, and elbows. In France, there is a similar style known as Savate, which utilizes many elements of Muay Thai.

There are too many styles to list. There is also the debate as to which style is superior. There is no objective answer to that question. It all comes down to the individual practitioner and his level of mastery.
