Karate’s history is widely known to be rooted back almost 1,500 years ago where a Buddhist monk created a system of self-defense that he was used to defend himself against the evil of the world. From India to China, he traveled, and with great experience and knowledge from the lands that he had passed, he incorporated fighting styles together to forged what is known today as “karate”. Once he arrived in China, he put the finishing touches and mastered the art of karate by gaining experience and knowledge from local residents. His art eventually became widely known to the villagers and only those that were strong and confident were able to master the art of karate. However the fact that karate was originated from China is only but a myth. Many say that the art of karate was created in a combat system on the island of Okinawa, Japan. Students of the combat system was taught karate in order to be able to defeat an opponent by kicking and striking them in vulnerable areas. Karate was taught throughout the island of Japan because it taught mental and physical discipline. The teachings of karate is known to be useful for everyone.

The martial art form from Thailand known as Muay Thai is the basis of the sport of kickboxing as it is known today. From these roots, the sport has spread around the world.
Modern kickboxing began in Japan in the 1950′s, and developed in the 1960′s, under the leadership of Tatsuo Yamada and Osamu Noguchi. These two men wanted to create a type of full contact karate mixed with the boxing style of Muay Thai.
Kickboxing grew in popularity in Japan through the 1970′s, but in the 1980′s, the popularity of the sport slipped. In 1993, with the formation of K-1, the popularity of the sport in Japan has returned.
Kickboxing began in the United States in the 1970′s. American kickboxing is essentially a combination of boxing with kicking allowed above the waist. The first matches were held on traditional karate mats, but the sport quickly moved into the use of boxing rings. With the formation of the Professional Karate Association(PKA), kickboxing became like boxing with championships, various weight classes and rankings.
In 1975, the World All Style Karate Organization was founded in Europe. By 1976, championship matches were being fought all over the continent. K-1 is very popular in Europe, especially in the Nethelands.

There are a lot of reasons to get into martial arts and if you haven’t noticed, it’s become quite the trend. Whether you’re going to train at a martial arts studio near your home or you’ve got a whole vacation retreat in mind, here are a few of the most common reasons our readers get into the sport.
Health: Martial arts is a great form of exercise and a lot of people find it to be lower impact than running or biking. It’s great for muscle sculpting, too, so you won’t just be burning calories, you’ll be building form.
Personal Protection: Self defense is another oft-cited reason for learning martial arts and whether you’re interested in Home security or just protecting yourself, learning a few basic moves could really come in handy one day. For simpler classes, try a local martial arts center.
To Join the Kids: Martial Arts has long been a favorite of the kids but now many parents are getting involved just to spend extra time with their progeny. It is a great bonding experience when you both chase the belt together.

Learning a martial arts discipline has a range of benefits. It’s a great way to stay in shape in a friendly environment and around others with similar goals. There are many styles to choose from. Most styles like karate and Tae Kwon Do revolve around striking from a standing position. Jiu-Jitsu on the other hand, utilizes take downs and grappling to subdue an opponent. Whichever you choose, you will gain the ability to defend yourself as well as boost your self-confidence.

Martial arts are about using proper technique and form, rather than pure strength. Is this new to you? Catch up here This makes it possible for a smaller person to neutralize someone much larger. This makes it a great form of self-defense for both women and young children. Knowing how to deflect an opponent’s attack and striking back is the key to effectively protect yourself from an attacker.

Martial arts does more than just whip you into shape, it also makes you more confident of your abilities. You will walk down a street and know that should you be attacked, you will be able to fight back. This gives you a strong mental boost. Knowing that you won’t be a helpless victim really helps you feel safe and strong.

The origin of the martial arts begins in the Far East and Orient. “Martial” simply means military-like. Several hundred years ago, the local peasants in the Oriental countries, such as China and Japan, were forbidden by their emperors and warlords from owning or carrying weapons. Only the military and police of the time were allowed weapons. Consequently, the monks and peasants learned various forms of unarmed self-defense, what we know today as “martial arts”. There were many different forms or styles. Some of the more popular were Kung Fu, Karate, Judo, and even the Ninja!

The Shaolin Temple monks taught how to use simple farm tools, such as staff, wheat thresher, sticks, chains, and turn them into formidable improvised weaponry. The different martial arts styles uses blocks, parries, twists, turns, kicks, blows, and throws to disable an opponent. Properly applied techniques could even kill an enemy if it came to a battle of life-or-death. In modern times, the various military forces around the world, especially elite units such as Special Forces, now teach martial arts techniques for their hand-to-hand combat training. Any individual trained in martial arts can be a very deadly opponent. Ideally martial arts are only used for self-defense.

Martial arts, the system of codified practices and tradition of combat, has become ever increasingly popular over the last several decades. Martial Arts is a sport that appeals to a large demographic of people.

One of the major contributions to the popularity of martial arts is the benefits people can receive from its practice. One of the most notable benefits is the health and fitness advantages that one receives from participation. It is known to increase strength, stamina, flexibility, movement coordination, and many more benefits. We are seeing an ever increasing demand for people to be physically fit and martial arts is a fun creative way to obtain physical exercise .This/tag helps explain it more. It can also contribute to mental health by increasing self-esteem, self-control, emotional and spiritual well-being for many participants.

Two other major contributors to the rise in popularity of martial arts is the new emergence of television coverage of martial arts events and fighting competition such as the UFC. We have also seen a decline in alternative sports such as boxing.

These and more have been major contributors to the rise in popularity in martial arts and considering the fun activities and benefits of such a wonderful sport, we should continue to see a steady rise in the participation and popularity of martial arts.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that places primary emphasis on grappling and submission holds. The style actually originated in Japan at the dawn of the 20th century. In the early 1900′s, a Japanese man by the name of Mitsuyo Maeda immigrated to Brazil. A business man named Gastao Gracie helped Maeda integrate into Brazilian culture and customs. The two quickly became close friends and Maeda took Gracie’s two sons under his wing and taught them the art of Jiu-Jitsu.

One of the sons, Helio, passed the art to his children. His eldest son, Rorion, later settled to the United States and started a full contact fighting tournament known as the Ultimate Fighting championship. Rorion’s younger brother, Royce, was added as a participant. The goal was to prove to the world that Jiu-Jitsu was superior to other forms of martial arts, especially those that revolved purely around striking.

Royce Gracie was successful in winning the first few tournaments. He defeated opponents much larger than himself. This showed to the world that technique can triumph over size and strength. Soon after, the whole world knew what Jiu-Jitsu was all about, and it opened everyone’s eyes to the ground aspect of fighting. Today, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is highly sought after by martial arts enthusiasts interested in developing a well-rounded combat discipline.
